Originally from Mesquite, Texas, John-Michael Lyles is a multi-hyphenate artist who works professionally as an actor, educator & composer in New York City and abroad. He graduated from Dallas’s prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing & Visual Arts as a member of both the National Honors Society & International Thespian Society. In 2010, his performance as Trinculo in The Tempest earned him first place in the English Speaking Union’s National Shakespeare Competition, which awarded him with a scholarship to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. After that study, he went on to earn a BFA in Musical Theater at Pace University, in the heart of New York City.
While studying at Pace, John-Michael worked professionally Off-Broadway and became a proud member of the Actor’s Equity Association. Since graduating, John-Michael has booked principal roles in some of New York City’s most critically acclaimed productions. He was recently seen in the original cast of Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer Prize winning musical A Strange Loop at Playwrights Horizons. At NYC’s Barrow Street Theater, he acted in the Pulitzer Prize winning play, The Flick, by Annie Baker, and played Tobias in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, starring Carolee Carmello & Norm Lewis. For his stand-out feature as the Courier in the New York City Center Encores production of 1776, the New York Times lauded his “hauntingly simple performance.” Encores continued to cast John-Michael in their future productions of Big River & Love Life. He also acted in Michael Mayer’s production of Brooklynite at the Vineyard in the East Village, and Ryan Scott Oliver’s NYC debut production of Jasper in Deadland with the Prospect Theater Company.
John-Michael became a member of SAG-AFTRA after making his film debut in Blind starring Alec Baldwin & Demi Moore. He’s continued to guest star on film & TV in Comedy Central’s The Other Two, NBC’s Chicago PD & CBS’s NCIS: New Orleans.
Regionally, he originated the role of Toby in Bliss at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. He also starred as Pharus in Choir Boy at the Tony-winning Guthrie Theater where he was deemed “a fleet and winning phenom on stage” by the Star Tribune. He also starred in Chicago’s Second City production of The Art of Falling.
As a composer, John-Michael recently wrote additional music for Second Stage’s Off-Broadway production of We’re Gonna Die, by Young Jean Lee. He is currently developing a new musical that has been produced by Musical Theatre Factory & Joe’s Pub in various capacities.
